On the afternoon of Wednesday, March 18, 1925, while the citizens of Murphysboro, DeSoto, Gorham and the surrounding countryside were trying to come to terms with the devastation of their communities, national wire services started reporting the news of the tragedy that had occurred.
Tri-State Tornado Vol I
This book, Volume I, is part of a three-volume set. This volume tells the story of the first 72 hours following the disaster. Everything in these volumes is verbatim written newspaper accounts, primarily the Murphysboro Republican Era, the Murphysboro Daily Independent and the Carbondale Free Press. Volume I contains some reporting from newspapers in St. Louis because reporting from the Murphysboro press was very limited in the first few days following the tornado.
Tri-State Tornado Vol II
This book, Volume II, is part of a three-volume set. This volume picks up where Volume I left off but focuses on the personal stories of those who perished and survived as reported to newspaper reporters of the Carbondale Free Press, the Murphysboro Republican Era and the Murphysboro Daily Independent. Everything in these stories is verbatim written newspaper accounts on the dates indicated. Photographs of tornado scenes in this volume are reproductions of photos in the Society’s collection. Photos of individuals were gathered through research from the JCHS volunteers.
